Industry: Oleodinamico - Produzione Pompe

The Client

Settima Meccanica was founded in 1978 with the aim of producing high-tech three-screw pumps for the elevator industry, designed to minimize noise emissions and pulsations in hydraulic circuits. Over time, the attention to customer needs has enabled the company to gain experience in other industrial branches as well. The product portfolio has expanded over the years, allowing Settima to become the leading manufacturer of silent pumps for both low and high-pressure applications.

In 2001, Settima invented a new range of external gear pumps with helical rotors, which became famous under the Continuum® brand, the first NO NOISE and NO VIBRATIONS pump for high-pressure and high-speed applications. Its revolutionary concept is internationally patented. The Continuum® pump quickly became the benchmark in major industrial and mobile applications.
The core of Settima’s production system lies in the high precision of its manufacturing processes.

The need

The company has multiple assembly lines served by line supermarkets where most of the high-rotating and medium/small-sized components, used in the various pump models produced by Settima Meccanica, are stored.

The company aimed to optimize the feeding process by guiding assembly line operators in preparing the lines (replacing the necessary materials during assembly depending on the type of pump being produced), by picking the correct materials from line supermarkets, thereby reducing preparation times and minimizing errors due to very similar materials being swapped. At the same time, the company wanted to optimize the picking and replenishment processes of line supermarkets.

The Solution

Open Mind recommended Settima to introduce Electronic Shelf Labels with Wireless Optical Technology (the fastest and most efficient technology available on the market).
Each location in supermarkets and assembly stations was equipped with a 2.6-inch Electronic Shelf Label, featuring an E-Ink display and RGB LED light (7 colors).

Depending on the process the operator needs to execute (Line emptying and component return to the supermarket or picking from the supermarket and Line preparation), the lights on the Labels associated with the components to be picked (Pick) are activated, and the lights associated with the locations where the picked items need to be placed (Put) are activated too.

The Labels update in real-time, displaying information related to the associated component, and the lights turn on in less than a second (0,8 sec).
Thanks to the introduced solution, line preparation times have been drastically reduced and preparation times have been significantly cut down.

Advantages and Achieved Results

  • Elimination of printing for paper production supports
  • Elimination of time/man for displaying new paper supports
  • Reduction of time required for preparing Assembly Lines and refilling Line Supermarkets
  • Elimination of errors due to material picking mistakes

Technologies Integrated in the Solution

Client Testimonial

“The solution developed in collaboration with Open Mind has allowed us to introduce a highly innovative system in the context of factory digitalization. The ability to precisely guide our operators in Lines preparation phases and refilling of Supermarkets was a crucial step in the automation process that Settima is pursuing. We started the project with a pilot line, but the results are fully satisfying, we will soon extend the Solution to all the Lines in the company.”
